Scripture
Psalm 95: 1-7 (ESV)
Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand.
Devotional Reflection
Why should Christians sing? This psalm teaches us that our singing in public worship serves as an act of confession, i.e., a confession of who God is and the great things he has done for us. The psalmist summons God's people and directs them to lift up a "joyful noise" and a "song of praise" for... What is the basis of the call to worship and sing? The recognition that God is the Creator of all things--a God who has no equal. A God who has formed the earth, the sea, and all that is in them. However, it is not simply God's great power that is the basis of joyful worship, but the fact that God has established a relationship with his people. "He is our God," the psalmist declares, "and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand." God's authority and power are, in and of themselves, not the foundation of joyful worship. We are sinners who rebel and chafe at and who resist such authority. For sinners, God's presence means his judgement--it is not an occasion for joyful singing. But what transforms all this is when God himself comes to us--not to judge--but to cleanse, to forgive, and to restore the relationship between Creator and creature. In mercy, our Maker has come down and made us his own once again. Our Shepherd has brought his lost sheep into the life-giving garden of his pastures. This is the foundation for our worship--not what we bring to God--but what God has done for us. This is the only true basis for lifting up a joyful song. God is our Maker, and we are his creatures who have wandered. But, thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, he has found us, claimed us as his own, and has blessed us to enter into his presence with a joyful heart and a glad song.
