Why are you doing this?
I've always been captivated by the profound ability of images to convey messages and emotions. During my initial career as a high school educator, I had the opportunity to teach a Film Studies course. I often emphasized to my students that motion pictures are essentially sequences of singular still frames – each frame a distinct image. When these frames are thoughtfully arranged, they can craft a compelling narrative.
Now, with the advent of emerging AI technology, I am intrigued by the potential of creating images that blend deliberate design with elements of serendipity. This fusion of intention and chance in image creation is a fascinating new frontier I am eager to explore.
Why do you call this "devotional" imagery?
We are instructed to "meditate" on God's Word--to let it fill us--to occupy our minds with its truth. For me, creating these images is a way to do just that. It forces me to read a text, slow down, think about its message, and respond intentionally.
How are you choosing your daily texts?
Currently, I'm basing each day's image on one of my daily readings from the Treasury of Daily Prayer. The TDP is organized around a one-year lectionary that includes a daily Psalm, OT, and NT reading.
What AI image generator do you use?
How long does it take you to generate an image?
Do you edit the images after AI generates them?
What are the challenges of using AI?
First, the AI generator that I use (DALL-E 3) is not very good at recognizing enumerated quantities in a prompt. If I ask for an image with two ducks, the AI might give me an image with 1, 5, or even a whole flock of ducks.
Second, DALL-E is even worse at following negative prompts. So if I say, remove/delete that duck from the next image. It's just as likely to give me an image with even more ducks.
Third, these images can be great if you don't look too closely at the details. That's often where you see the AI capabilities break down the most. Hands, faces, places where elements of the image transition. I don't think AI art is going to replace truly skilled human artists any time soon.
What is "The Reject Pile"?
Just a gallery of misfit AI images. The broken eggshells on the way to the omelet.
